Meg Ryan by Nephthys76 Meg Ryan by Nephthys76
Meg Ryan, star of "Sleepless in Seattle", "When Harry Met Sally", and "You've Got Mail" (among many others).

Reference: [link]
WIP: [link]

With this drawing, I focused on darker shadows and more contrast to make my drawings look less like an overexposed photo. I think I made good progress toward that end.

start date: 6/18/2012
finish date: 7/1/2012
(13 days)

Materials:
11x14 Bristol Vellum paper
graphite pencils 6H-2B
kneaded eraser
camel hair brush

Pure awesomeness...

P.S.: 6H pencils !? they should stop producing these cold melee weapons :D And again stunning work

Thank so much! :)

I don't use the 6H much... but it sure comes in handy when I want something barely shaded, nearly white. Mostly I used it here on the lightest highlight of her arm and in the white quilt she's lying on.

Thanks also for the fave and the watch! :)

Thank you so much. I struggle a lot getting the smooth look on the skin. I often have to tap it out with a kneaded eraser and come back over it with a softer pencil and no pressure, and fill in the tiny gaps. Sometimes I wonder if there isn't an easier way. It takes forever.

It's worth the time if it looks that good. :) OH, I've started watching the 5 pencil method... it's really interesting... makes alot of sense. I've got to go buy me some more pencils. Thanks for suggesting it.

My pleasure. I started watching it in between drawing my Dark Shadows/Johnny Depp drawings, and my John Cleese drawing. You can definitely see a marked improvement between them.

Some pencil brands suck, and don't have consistent graphite, and some will even scratch the paper... there is a section on that site that is a pencil review. Make sure you grab on of the top 3 or 4 brands of pencil if you can.

The difference in your pictures before and after is very noticeable. I hope that I will find similar improvement.

I was going to buy cheap walmart drawing pencils... I guess I should compare the price of those at the hobby store. I'm not really sure where to find them... I'll have to look around.

I got some decent Faber Castell pencils at Michaels. But do not buy the Artist's Loft pencils, they suck. A box of 8 pencils cost me about $15 I think. But it included and eraser and a pencil sharpener, and I don't use either of them. I'm lucky to have an art store near where I work, and they have good pencils sold individually for about $1.25 each. You might just want to order some online at Dick Blick (www.dickblick.com).
